The Awake Facelift

The facelift can easily be done comfortably under a local anesthetic with the patient awake. Many patients prefer this and I am perfectly okay with this “twilight anesthesia.” It is safe – even safer than general anesthesia in many ways, and recovery is ofter quicker. In the twilight anesthesia technique Valium and morphine are given IV and great comfort is possible. The doctor and patient can communicate throughout and the surgeon can ask the patient to move muscles that may help in decision making.

Is an anesthesiologist or CRNA in attendance during twilight anesthesia? Possibly but most of the plastic surgeons run the anesthesia safely themselves and save patients money without compromising safety.

Does a patient feel pain if awake? Possibly but usually there is no memory of any pain and all is well. Patients often feel safer if they can be awake throughout and I am perfectly in agreement with this method.  In 2012 it is important to listen to patients and give them what they choose. The old days of doctors being dictators are over. The era of patient and physician negotiation is the rule. I like this, and so do patients.

What will Obama care offer as far as local or general is concerned.  I feel Obama care will offer all of us much and good choices will be made.  If you have questions about surgery or anesthesia please call and I will discuss in detail all with you.

When I have my facelift I want to be awake for many reasons.  I have done and continue to do many facelift under local anesthesia. Local anesthesia is a wonderful approach. Make you doctor listen to you. If you desire an awake facelift, demand it.

Can 9 hour facelifts be done under local? Of course they can. Go for a facelift awake.  You will be happy you did. Call or email me about anything. I charge $150.00 for a consultation regarding these procedures, but 100% of this can be applied to your surgery, Botox or other treatment.
